GVSU Teaching for Equity (02/26/2024) With a multitude of sessions to choose from, I immersed myself in discussions centered around fostering equitable teaching practices. Venturing into the realm of punk pedagogy, I explored innovative approaches to disrupt traditional power dynamics in the classroom and empower students from marginalized backgrounds. In another captivating session, I delved into strategies for effectively teaching multilingual and English language learner students, gaining valuable insights into culturally responsive teaching methods. Additionally, I had the privilege of attending a session focused on promoting equity in the science classroom, where I learned practical techniques to ensure all students have equitable access to STEM education. This enriching experience not only broadened my understanding of educational equity but also equipped me with a diverse toolkit to create inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive.
GVSU Trauma Informed Teaching Practices (10/04/2023) This professional development session provided a comprehensive understanding of trauma, its various manifestations, and its profound impact on students' learning experiences. Through listening to a keynote speaker and engaging discussions, we explored strategies tailored to create safe and supportive learning environments for students who have experienced trauma. Delving into the origins of trauma and its diverse forms, we gained insights into the complex interplay of factors shaping students' responses to adversity. Equipped with evidence-based practices, we learned how to sensitively and effectively respond to trauma, fostering resilience and empowering students to thrive academically and emotionally.
