Atmosphere: Human Impacts Project Below are the instructions and rubric for the project I created for my 11th grade Environmental Science students at Forest Hills Northern High School. This project entailed creating a podcast or video detailing one way in which humans influence the Earth's atmosphere.
Carbon Dioxide Project This project involved my 10th grade STEM Chemistry students competing in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, in which they achieved state finalist status (top 6 of Michigan). The project focused on developing solutions to reduce CO2 levels in classrooms, addressing the negative impact of CO2 on student cognitive function, decision-making, attention span, and academic performance. During the data collection phase, my students engaged in a Zoom meeting with award-winning science journalist, James Nestor to discuss the research findings described in his book, Breath. I co-implemented this project with the three teachers I worked with while student teaching in the STEM 10th grade cohort. This team was comprised of myself, my mentor teacher (Chemistry), an AP Computer Science teacher, and an Algebra II teacher. A scientific research publication is forthcoming.
Handmade in the Hills Handmade in the Hills is a business model developed by my mentor teacher in 2020. HMH is an all natural, cold-processed soap business run by 10th grade STEM Chemistry students. Throughout each school year, students manage the HMH business, from soap-making and understanding the chemical process of saponification, to pricing, marketing, website creation, Instagram management, packaging, logo design, 3D printing, local outreach, and sales. As a student teacher, I was very fortunate to contribute to this applied learning experience! Click on the buttons below to be directed to the HMH website and Instagram!
